Don García de Silva y Figueroa was an educated man, having studied at Salamanca. Like a modern traveller, he thoroughly prepared his journey to Persia by consulting numerous works on history and geography. Being a compulsive diarist, he wrote dozens of letters, as well as a voluminous travel account, during his long eastern journey, with stopovers in Goa, Muscat and Hormuz, and the unfinished journey back to Europe.
Volumes three and four of the critical edition of Comentários feature the annotated alphabetical index and an extended set of studies conducted by an international group of specialists, which provide a better understanding not only of the author, but also of his Comentários and the context of his diplomatic mission to the Safavid court.
