About the Press

CHAM Publishing is a university press specialising in the open access publication of high-quality books and journals in the Humanities. In alignment with the mission of CHAM – Centre for the Humanities of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH) and the University of the Azores (UAc), its primary objective is to disseminate innovative research that adheres to the highest standards of quality and scholarly rigor, promoting inter- and transdisciplinary approaches while covering a broad geographical and chronological range.

Publishing is one of CHAM's main lines of action, aiming at disseminating original works of academic interest and contributing to a wider dissemination of the scientific activity conducted at (or in partnership with) the Centre.

The majority of our publications are authored by external researchers, both domestic and foreign, which complement and contribute to the development of the research areas focused by the Center's strategic project.

CHAM's editorial programme is based on compliance with international criteria for scientific publications and covers different publishing modalities (printed and digital), journals, series and collections. CHAM is also committed to the principles of environmental sustainability and democratisation of access to knowledge, by making all its publications available in open access, free of charge.

OUR BOOK COLLECTIONS

Studies & Documents Collection
Launched in 2002, the E&D is presently CHAM's most international collection, mainly featuring monographs and collective volumes combining contributions related to the research subjects being addressed at the Centre and mostly written by foreign external researchers.

CHAM eBooks Collection
Available in digital format, covers a broader scope and includes monographs, essays, collective volumes and historical sources, mostly resulting from collective and individual research carried out at the Centre.

CHAM AÇORES Collection
Aims to be a space for reflection, discussion, and interconnection of regional and global contexts, contributing to the innovation, deepening, and dissemination of knowledge. Published volumes in the CHAM Açores Collection mainly focus on topics related to the history, heritage, and insular and Atlantic culture of any chronological period. We particularly welcome contributions that focus on Macaronesia. Volumes in this collection should preferably be coordinated by members of the Azorean Academy.

ArqueoArte Collection
Aims at disseminating works in the field of modern archaeology, devoting particular attention to issues such as the safeguarding, conservation and enhancement of archaeological heritage, with a special focus on the territories, structures and materials resulting from the process of Portuguese expansion in the 15th to 19th centuries.

Atlantic Collection
Is the result of an international partnership between EDUFBA and CHAM and aims at reflecting on the whole of the Portuguese imperial/colonial experience, in order to contribute to the recent historiographical debate on the history of empires and Atlantic history.

OUR SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS (*)

AHAM — Anais de História de Além-Mar
The AHAM Journal publish academic works about the Portuguese overseas expansion, from the outset of the first "great navigations" (15th century) to the end of the "Overseas Empire" (20th century). The historical framework, and the comparison of parallel phenomena and articulations between the history and societies of the spaces involved should also be contemplated in these works.

CULTURA — Revista de História e Teoria das Ideias
The CULTURA Journal is an interdisciplinary publication converging the perspectives of history, philosophy, political thought and literary studies. It deals with political, religious, scientific, economic, social, aesthetic and philosophical ideas and practices in their forms of expression and dissemination, with emphasis on the connection between the Portuguese and the Iberian, Brazilian and lbero-American context.

Res Antiquitatis — Journal of Ancient History
The primary focus of this editorial project is the study of various ancient civilisations (Mediterranean, African, and Asian), and the diverse ways in which Antiquity has been received, perceived, and conceptualised over time. This is pursued both for its intrinsic scientific value and for the belief that such an endeavour may, in its entirety, serve as a valuable conceptual tool for the study of other periods, historical topics, and questions.

Práticas da História: Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past
Online academic journal published at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH) with the support of the IHC – Institute of Contemporary History and of CHAM – Centre for the Humanities. The main aim of the journal is the promotion of discussions on historical theory, historiography, and the uses of the past.

(*) Proposals for CHAM Publishing's scientific journals must be submitted on the respective pages.
