Synopsis

Study, Digitisation and Dissemination of Collections constitutes the first volume of the series Photographic Archives: Research and Artistic Practices. This publication stems from the workshop organised by the Institute of Art History, School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon / IN2PAST – Associate Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory, in cooperation with Lisbon’s Municipal Photographic Archive. The event took place on 17 May 2023 and involved a collaboration with the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon and the San Jorge University in Zaragoza. With contributions from a group of Portuguese and Spanish researchers who have approached and analysed issues related to the preservation, digitisation, and (re)interpretation of photographic archives, the texts and visual essays gathered in this book draw from interdisciplinary, geographical and cultural intersections, questioning the relevance of the archive for academic, curatorial, and artistic research.
