Between Data and Power: Digital Infrastructures and Everyday Life
Keywords:
datafication, digital infrastructures, sociotechnical power, digital governanceSynopsis
“Between Data and Power: Digital Infrastructures and Everyday Life” critically examines the role of digital infrastructures and datafication processes in the organization and governance of contemporary societies. It starts from the premise that these phenomena, which complement and reinforce each other, are not merely technical tools: neutral and inevitable. On the contrary, they constitute forms of power, mostly controlled by private commercial interests, which penetrate, transform, and structure an ever-growing number of spheres of social life, often without being subject to public scrutiny. This is the central goal of this book: to make the contours of this transformation visible through situated analyses of how digital infrastructures and datafication processes operate, the logics and normativities they impose, their social, political, and economic implications, and the possibilities for imagining other futures. This book is organized in three parts: (1) impacts of the datafication of social life; (2) the governance and regulation of digital infrastructures; and (3) the possibilities for building critical and democratic alternatives. By articulating international debates with empirical studies presented in Portuguese, the book problematizes our growing technological dependence and proposes an informed reflection for fairer and more transparent socio-technical futures.
