“Considering the period between 1860 and the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910, this study includes a critical overview of music education before the foundation of the conservatory, as well as the early development of that institution [...]. It does not solely limit itself to the conservatory but thoroughly analyses other institutions and private spaces for music education. From the careful study and analysis of an extensive collection of documentary data, an extremely comprehensive and detailed picture of music education in the capital of a historically highly centralised country emerges for the first time.
