Synopsis

It is hoped that this volume can contribute to the foundation of new discussions around ceramics from the North and Center regions of Portugal between the 9th and 12th centuries, which are still so poorly known. The realities productive areas of a vast range of territory, generically structured by Mondego and Douro rivers, are very different and reflect settlement dynamics
equally different. The work presented here allowed us to see what occurs at the level of uses and production of ceramics in cities, in palatine areas, in high fortified sites, in some religious spaces and in agglomerations rural populations established in the valleys. The richness and variety of these perspectives made the meeting held in Conímbriga in May 2012 very
fruitful, and not all the discussion that took place can be summarized in the texts published. However, the volume now presented aims to mark a restart of publications relating to the medieval artefactual world of the territories north of the Tagus.
