Synopsis

Based on the analysis of very different sources (chronological, documentary, epistolary, iconographic, among others), both Portuguese and foreign, the aim of this anthology is to critically reflect on the composition and description of European landscapes - physical and human - in the 15th and 16th centuries. Naturally, special attention is paid to the relationship between Portugal and the continent of which it is a part: on the one hand, the aim is to investigate how the European space was projected in Portugal during the period in question, while on the other hand, the aim is to identify the nature of the representations constructed between Portugal and Europe. On the other hand, we are looking for valid answers to central questions such as the character and constancy of the relations maintained with the various European territories. Although, in recent years, the knowledge of relations between Portugal and the rest of Europe has been deepened from a documentary and historiographical point of view, the truth is that much remains to be done in order to understand the character and configuration of Portuguese conceptions and representations of the European continent in the 400s and 500s, as well as to identify and apprehend the mechanisms for recognizing the realities of the Old Continent in the cultured circles of the Portuguese kingdom. These are the central objectives of a multidisciplinary set of studies, which aim to delve into the various exchanges that took place between Portugal and different parts of the world.
