About the Press

The IEM's publications reflect the dynamics of its research and its ability to establish partnerships with other institutions in order to make high-quality publications available to specialists and the public interested in the Middle Ages.

There are two distinct phases in its publishing strategy. The first corresponds to the phase up to 2005, during which sparse works and the proceedings of important scientific meetings organized by the Institute were published and the publication of the IEM's digital journal, Medievalista, which is still published annually, began. This phase also saw the completion of some publications by the now-defunct Scientific Center for Medieval Studies at FCSH/NOVA, to which IEM was heir.

In a second phase, after 2007, two editorial lines (series) were defined, one dedicated to Studies and the other to Documents. The latter is intended exclusively for the publication of critical editions of documents and the former has housed the proceedings of scientific meetings, collections of studies, etc. In 2014, the Working Instruments series was launched.

Whenever possible and out of series, the IEM has published other works - catalogs, for example - usually in partnership with prestigious cultural institutions. More recently, the option of e-books has begun to gain importance, due to the obvious advantages in the dissemination of knowledge and the virtualities it allows.
