The book Contributions to a history of journalists in Portugal points out the main aspects of the historical process that marked the transformations of the journalistic profession. Before being journalism, it was necessary to imagine journalism. The dynamics of the profession and its movements towards greater institutionalization and professionalization are built on the relationship generated with other social fields. We highlight five aspects: the legal plan, in which a regulatory framework of rights and duties associated with the performance of journalism stabilized and translated into a set of social expectations and ethical values; the associative plan, which revealed the ability of journalists to organize themselves as a professional class and define a set of rules of belonging and mutual help. This process was crucial to strengthen a profession characterized by its fragility, porosity and fluidity; the level of education and training, fundamental for the definition of competencies and the marking of a distinct professional territory; the political level, which subjugated journalism in Portugal due to the long duration of the dictatorship, but which also fostered pockets of resistance that are part of the history of journalists; the level of labour struggles and claims, which allowed the conquest of social rights. These are the axes we propose to guide the reading through a history of journalists, summarized here in significant moments from a long path. The selection seeks to capture social dynamics that cut across and instil historical events relevant to the history of the profession.
